We're revisiting the Guangzhou Muslim Restaurant (Huimin Restaurant), a legendary spot in Yuexiu District that's been serving for seventy years. We did a dine-in deep dive into their signature crispy-skinned, juicy Halal roast duck, plump and bouncy Cantonese-style niurou wan (beef meatballs), and grabbed some classic jumbo jianjiao (pan-fried dumplings) from their takeaway window. Get ready to experience the iconic flavors of Guangzhou's largest Halal Cantonese old-timer.

It's been a minute since I hit up the Guangzhou Muslim Restaurant (Huimin Restaurant), and seriously, this place is a classic, old-school Cantonese Halal joint, widely known as the biggest Halal Cantonese restaurant in the city. Back when I used to work nearby, I'd always swing by their takeaway window for breakfast. Their jianjiao (pan-fried dumplings) were always huge and super filling, and the niurou wan (beef meatballs) were seriously substantial—one bite and you were set for the day.

This time, I made a special trip to dine in. Their signature Huimin niuzha tang (beef offal soup) was packed with a rich peppery kick, and the beef tripe was stewed to perfection—super tender and easy to chew. Paired with pickled daikon, it totally cuts through any richness. The ziran kaoyangpai (cumin-spiced roasted lamb ribs) had a hint of Cantonese char siu (barbecue pork) flavor, with a crispy exterior and juicy interior, and barely any gamey lamb taste. And their Huimin yuanyang ji (Muslim 鸳鸯 chicken) was a hit, with its crispy skin and tender meat, a total fave for many old-school Guangzhou locals. Overall, it’s classic old-Guangzhou flavor, with generous portions. Just a heads up, service at this long-standing spot can be a bit hit-or-miss, but the vibe is still that familiar, retro, old-school feel.
