FlySafair had to divert a flight destined for Cape Town and land in Gqeberha due to what the airline described as a “minor technical issue”.

The low cost carrier told customers in an update on its website that flight FA143 had departed from East London at 3.20pm on Wednesday and “shortly after take-off, the crew became aware of an issue”.

“In the interest of safety, the decision was made to divert to Gqeberha.”

The airline described the incident as a “minor technical issue” but did not elaborate.
 
The aircraft landed safely in Gqeberha at 4.35pm.

Just under an hour later the airline said FA 143 had been cleared for take-off and was departing for Cape Town.

“We would like to extend our apologies to the customers on board FA 143 for the inconvenience, and we thank them for their patience in allowing us to always act conservatively in the interest of safety,” the airline said.

Do you know that before the advent of Covid-19 pandemic tuberculosis (TB) was the cause of death from a single infectious agent surpassing HIV/Aids?

It is quite unfortunate that this infection was not given much attention, despite the number of lives it has claimed globally due to inadequate allocation of resources or complete neglect through stigmatisation in society.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) approximates that one-quarter of the world’s population has a TB infection that is waiting for an opportunity to manifest when one’s immune system is compromised. Being an airborne disease, case reports have shown that TB can attack the lungs and other body organs (extra-pulmonary TB).
 
It can be transmitted from person to person through coughing, singing, spitting or sneezing, especially in enclosed and non-ventilated settings. Its signs and symptoms can take long to manifest but generally, it is associated with cough of any duration, fever, night sweats or weight loss.

A report released by Global Tuberculosis for 2020 has some shocking statistics that warrant urgent action to avert the situation. The report estimates that 9.9 million people fell ill with TB and of these, 1.5 million died from the disease, including 214,000 people with HIV.

This translates to over 4,100 people dying each day globally from TB and close to 28,000 people falling ill with the disease. However, there is hope since the situation was worse several decades ago, but now, through concerted efforts from various countries, agencies and partners, more than 66 million lives have been saved from the year 2000 to date.

High burden country

Back at home, Kenya remains a high burden country for TB, TB/HIV and Drug-Resistant TB, with a prevalence of 426 per 100,000 population. Although, prior to Covid-19 pandemic, Kenya had made a steady progress in combating TB, when you compare the data pre and during Covid-19 (2019 and 2020), annual TB report (2020) recorded a case notification rate of 154 per 100,000 population, a decline from 165/100,000 population in 2019.

The decrease signifies 48 per cent estimated incident TB cases were either missed or not notified in the year. This is perilous in that this population is freely interacting with everyone in the community and exponentially transmitting the infection.

Astonishingly, there is now a worrying trend of Drug-Resistant TB (DRTB), which even attacks people who have never taken anti-TB drugs in their entire lives. Statistically, Kenya recorded 40 per cent increase in DRTB from 689 in 2019 to 961 in 2020. This is where the rubber meets the road, hence necessitating declaration for investment in TB control.

From the health economics point of view, Value-TB research that was conducted by Kairu et al (2021), showed the cost of treating Drug Sensitive TB (DSTB), including monitoring tests, in Kenya ranged between $135 and $160 (Sh15,400 and Sh18,300) while for DRTB ranged between $3,230.28-$3,926.52 (Sh369,700 and Sh449,400).

Despite TB being curable and preventable, and cost-free drugs and tests, patients are still incurring catastrophic costs directly and indirectly. This has been cemented and augmented by TB patient cost survey that was carried in 2017 showing appalling figures of how people have been impoverished with TB due to out-of-pocket expenditures. The survey unveiled the agony of patients in spending a whopping Sh26,041.49 and Sh145,109.53 for an episode of DSTB and DRTB, respectively.

In cognizant of the above information, the world is uniting to commemorate World TB Day on March 24 every year. In this year’s theme, ‘Invest to End TB. Save Lives’, WHO conveys the urgent need to invest resources, which include but are not limited to human resource for health, health products and diagnostic technologies, infrastructure and staff capacity building to cobble up the fight against TB in a mission to achieve the milestones and targets that were unanimously agreed upon by the global honchos.

More investment

The investment will be of great impetus towards ensuring equitable access to prevention and quality of care, which is in tandem with WHO’s and Kenya’s Big 4 Agenda towards achieving the Universal Health Coverage.

As a country, we are grappling to put more investment in the fight against TB as per the TB programme national strategic plan, with a projected annual budget of $60,072,511.39 but only gets allocated $34,169,895.81, conspicuously leaving a 43 per cent unfunded gap.

In conclusion, for us to reduce and control TB, we need to recognise that everyone has the responsibility to fight and destigmatise TB through gather all scatter none phenomenon right from the community to the executive level, private to public sectors (public-private mix), civil society organisations to technical partners, healthcare workers, care givers to researchers. Otherwise, if you are not infected, you are affected.

Kenyans were shocked that boda boda riders who recently molested a woman motorist and melted into thin air were identified and rounded up by police within hours, thanks to a new Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) laboratory.

This lab will be a game-changer. Other than speeding up investigations, it will enable sleuths to process and place criminals at scenes of crime better, meaning thugs who remained on the loose for lack of evidence could now be charged for multiple offences and jailed for longer terms.  

This is good news for wananchi who live in constant fear of violent robberies, grievous injuries, sexual assault and murder. Gangsters will quickly learn that the noose has tightened. On the converse, it will equally become harder to jail innocent people based on manufactured circumstantial evidence.

What is, however, disheartening are reports that the February 28 launch of the laboratory, pending since 2018, was postponed yet again due to procurement wrangles between State security agencies.
 
Wrangles or complications regarding the operations of this laboratory at this stage in time are a big disappointment, given that Kenyans have been waiting for this project for 25 years.

Flagged off in 1997 as part of huge security project by the Kanu government, it waded into the infamous AngloLeasing scandal in the Narc government where billions of taxpayers’ money were allegedly stolen by senior government officials working in cahoots with crooked suppliers.

Although several government officials were charged with various offences, the cases have dragged on for so long that several suspects ended up dying before the matters were concluded by the courts. It is the irony of the times that a security project intended to curb crime itself fell victim to the machinations of a criminal syndicate.     

That, however, is water under the bridge. Kenyans have tasted what this laboratory can do for them and they are thirsty for more. We say this because crime has been a major stranglehold on the lives of Kenyans – causing property losses, destroying and hindering investment and occasioning injuries and loss of lives.

It is for these reasons that this laboratory, together with other investments in the security sector such as digitisation of the courts, police and land records, must be allowed to proceed without hindrance.

Ultimately, systems that keep criminals in check and have them swiftly apprehended, processed and jailed could be President Uhuru Kenyatta’s greatest legacy.

The president must therefore protect this legacy by reigning in rogue officers who are out to scuttle this noble project that has been elusive for so long. He must deliberately put effort to ensure this lab is commissioned before he leaves office in August.

First, we need to generate a keychain. With this keychain, we’ll get some testnet BTC from a faucet, and then use that BTC to start mining.

We need to get some testnet BTC to that address. Grab the btcAddress field, and head over to the Stacks testnet website. In the BTC faucet section, past in your btcAddress, and submit. You’ll be sent 0.5 testnet BTC to that address. Don’t lose this information - we’ll need to use the privateKey field later on.

When I find a niche for my website, I first go to Google, and manually research the words I have in mind. Maybe I will try 3 variations of the keyword until I find one that suits best my needs. Then I narrow down the search results (supply of websites offering similar business as me) to below 30 million websites. If it is more than that, then the keyword for the niche I have chosen will probably be too hard to score high on the search engines. 

Also, I will not want words that will only give me search results below 100K as it indicates very few people are searching about that online and I might risk having a few or no business. 

After I have done these initial steps, I take it further on my favorite keyword research tool - the brainstorm tool from SBI. It does the rest for me. It takes my chosen keyword and brainstorms the web to give me a lot more variations. 

I will then compare demand vs. supply on those keywords to estimate my profitability level for the business. Then I will create my site blueprint based on the keywords and start building my site.

This same system that has this brainstorm tool, is also a site builder by the way, and I can build my entire site in it, and even audit each web page before they are published online. 

I particularly like the system because within it, I get many tools and essentially everything I really need to run my business.

These deposited bitcoins can only be released when both agree on payment or refund. This keeps incentives aligned without the need for escrow agents or reputation systems.

 Choice Of Two Party Escrow

To appreciate the value of the two-party escrow system and why it is so important for secure, private and middlemen free exchange, it is worth considering problems with the traditional approach of using a 3rd party escrow agent.

In a third party escrow system the buyer and seller ask a third trusted party (an escrow agent) to receive payment from the buyer before the item is delivered and to then release the payment to the seller after the item is delivered. If there is a dispute about the quality of the item or whether it was delivered, the third party acts as a mediator and decides whether to send the payment or refund the buyer. Some of the problems with this model include:
 
    •  Unless escrow agent receives the item before forwarding it to the buyer and has the expertise to verify the quality of the item, they have no means of fairly mediating a dispute. This problem becomes much worse when services are being exchanged. Proof of package delivery doesn't verify what was delivered or its quality and photos from the buyer could be of another item, etc.

     • Credit cards and centralized marketplaces seem like existence proofs of working escrow agents but they are non-anonymous, do not resolve disputes fairly (as most small merchants can tell you) and are known to break in markets with high fraud potential (e.g. third world countries, porn, etc).

     • Untrustworthy escrow agents who may steal escrow, fail to release escrow or collude with (or be) one of the parties.

     • Escrow agents with a strong reputation may be doing a long con to take off with or extort a large payment or group of payments.

     • Escrow agent expenses in the form of labor and risk are passed on to the buyer and seller.
 

 
 
Finding a trustworthy agent requires a reputation system and building reputation systems in anonymous networks remains an unsolved problem (see next section).


Fortunately, a two-party escrow made possible by Bitcoin's multi-signature transactions can solve all of these problems.
 
Where Reputation Systems Are Required

For transactions involving goods delivery of the size typical for a user's cash transactions, we suspect a two-party escrow will be sufficient to address the problem of trust. But there are classes of transactions where reputation systems seem to be required. Some examples include:

 • Larger transactions such as those of the size that typically involve debt (e.g. purchasing a car), where the necessary size of security deposits for two-party escrow may be prohibitive.

 • Transactions involving services where buyer and seller meet in person (e.g. taxis) pose a risk that either party may physically coerce the other into releasing the transaction or otherwise harm them.

 • Transactions where there is a significant cost for nondelivery beyond the price of the item (e.g. urgent medical supplies and services, critical parts, deadline-driven projects).

 • Transactions where quality is difficult to objectively assess or where the client may not have the expertise to assess it (e.g. professional services).

 • Transactions where a buyer has strong concerns about exposing their physical address to a potentially malicious seller.

Reputation System Failures

Although reputation systems are useful, there are many potential ways for malicious agents to attack them. Systems that do not address these may be worse than no reputation system at all as they can result in users extending trust to untrustworthy parties or unwittingly exposing their real identities. These attacks include:

 • Build false trust: Posting fake positive reviews by creating many identities and performing transactions and posting reviews between them.

 • Build false distrust: Posting fake negative reviews of competitors.

 • Long cons: completing in good faith many transactions in order to accumulate and then exploit trust extended for a large or large group of transactions.

• Trusted parties whose computers become compromised. This is not a threat with two-party escrow as economic incentives are aligned regardless of the trustworthiness of the parties.

 • Identity leaks via delivery: Attaching reviews or history information to identities in externally verifiable ways can leak information (e.g. timing analysis by combining real-world delivery records with online transaction and review times), particularly when gathered over time.

 • Identity leaks via network analysis: Combining known real-world connection data (e.g. social network, business or friend networks) with the reputation system's network of reviews and even a single exposed real identity may provide strong hints to the real identities to other relatively direct connections.
 
 

 
 
 
 
While the Bitcoin blockchain and cryptographic signatures could provide a means of externally verifying trade history, when trades where done and whether or not they were completed, it doesn't address the fake review problem and it makes the system potentially more vulnerable to identity leaks. As far as we know, there are no existing reputation systems that sufficiently address any of these issues.
 

Trust Network Challenges

The network of trust solutions, where users keep contact lists of other users they trust and potentially share reviews between them solve the fake review problem. However, the trade-off is having fewer available reviews and that comprising one user can leak the identities of all members of their trust network if the cryptographic identities are tagged with real names.

This problem can be addressed if the market only allows the tagging of a trusted reviewer's cryptographic identities with the user's trust level in them. This also requires a more proactive role for the user in requesting these identities from those they trust and doing so in a way that does not record the connection between cryptographic and real identities.



Choice Of Escrow Ratios

 • Deposits are small enough that locking the funds over the period of the transaction wouldn't be a burden for either party in the sizes in which the buyer might make cash purchases.

 • Simple enough to be easily understood by users.

The 1-1 ratio seems to be the simplest choice which meets all of these requirements.

The mediator then shares the unsigned raw transaction with the buyer.

7. The buyer signs the raw transaction using the signing tab with his/her private key. This generates a new 1st signed raw transaction. The buyer then shares the 1st signed raw transaction with the seller/mediator for their signature. Now either the seller or the mediator can sign the 1st signed raw transaction by repeating step 7. This will generate the 2nd signed raw transaction.

8. The 2nd signed raw transaction can then be broadcast to the main network using the Broadcast tab which will generate a new Transaction ID (TX ID). You can use Blockchain Explorer to check the status of the Transaction. This confirms the completion of the escrow transaction
