How to get started developing with FPGA?some useful tutorials?

I had to build a serial port using an FPGA because the processor we were using didnt have enough serial ports. I was pretty intimidated especially when I saw all the tools doing their thing in the DOS window.

I am interested in learning FPGAs for making audio hardware, but programmers have alway told me that FPGAs are really difficult. Maybe they say this because they are used to working with sequential concepts. FPGAs seem more intuitive to me because they are like building circuits without the extra abstraction of a sequential language.
