not understanding the difference between READ and RETRIEVE in CRUD

not understanding the difference between READ and RETRIEVE in CRUD... online they're just saying "sometimes RETRIEVE can be substituted for READ". What does that mean? Based on the way a developer codes the CRUD handler? Or what?
