A Historical Overview of the Tongxin Great Mosque in Ningxia: The Evolution and Revolutionary Legacy of a National Key Cultural Relic

Abstract:

Tracing the brilliant history of the Tongxin Great Mosque in Ningxia as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit. Looking back at the revolutionary history of the Red Army's Western Expedition in 1936, when they established the Yuhai County Hui Autonomous Government of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region right here, showcasing its dual value as both a religious site and a revolutionary relic.

Located in the southern part of Tongxin County, Wuzhong City, the Tongxin Great Mosque is a national-level cultural relic protection unit. First built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, it is the oldest and largest surviving Islamic architectural complex in Ningxia.

According to historical records, the mosque was originally built during the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty on the former site of a Yuan Dynasty Tibetan Buddhist temple. It underwent major renovations in the 56th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1791), the 33rd year of the Guangxu reign (1907), and again in 1944. Between 1982 and 1985, the People's Government of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region allocated a total of 610,000 RMB to thoroughly restore the architecture of the Tongxin Great Mosque.

The complex consists of two main sections arranged at different elevations, covering a building area of about 3,500 square meters and capable of holding 800 worshippers for prayer at the same time. The upper and lower sections are connected by a brick platform standing about 10 meters high, giving the entire architectural complex the silhouette of a grandfather clock. The main prayer hall, the minaret (邦克楼 - bangkelou), the north and south scriptural halls, and the gate tower make up the upper section, while the mosque gate, outer courtyard, spirit wall (照壁 - zhaobi), pump house, and ablution facilities form the lower section.

The spirit wall in front of the mosque features brick carvings titled "Moon Hidden Among Pines and Cypresses." Across from the spirit wall are three brick-built arched gates engraved with Arabic brick carvings and floral patterns. The central gate is inscribed with the three large characters for "Mosque" (清真寺), while the left and right gates bear the inscriptions "Forgiveness" (忍心) and "Patience" (忍耐). Above the arches sits the minaret, a pavilion-style structure with a double-eaves Xieshan-style roof.

The main prayer hall is a single-eaves Xieshan-style building with a front porch, facing east toward Mecca. It is five bays wide, with multi-treasure cabinets flanking the front porch decorated with brick carvings of pines, chrysanthemums, bamboos, and lotuses. The interior features wooden flooring, and the walls are adorned with verses from the Quran.

It's also worth noting that this place is a well-known revolutionary red tourism site. In June 1936, Peng Dehuai led the Red Army's Western Expedition to Yuwang County in Ningxia (now Tongxin County). After liberating the entire Yuwang area, the CPC Central Committee decided to establish the Yuhai County Hui Autonomous Government. From October 20 to 22 of the same year, the founding assembly of the autonomous government was held right here at the Tongxin Great Mosque. This was the first red ethnic minority autonomous regime in Chinese history. (Ningxia-49, Third Batch of National Key Cultural Relic Protection Units, written on February 13, 2025) view all
