Exploring Guangzhou's 30-Year-Old Halal Butcher Shop on Zhixing Road: Fresh Beef & Local Favorites
Exploring Guangzhou's 30-Year-Old Halal Butcher Shop on Zhixing Road: Fresh, Seasoned Beef and Halal Ingredients Trusted by Local Neighborhood Regulars
Summary:

A visit to a legendary halal fresh meat and grocery shop that has been running for over 30 years on Zhixing Road in Guangzhou's historic old town. Documenting their signature pre-seasoned fresh beef and beef and lamb offal, slaughtered strictly according to Islamic dietary laws and weighed and sliced to order, showcasing the decades-long trust and reputation built among Guangzhou's neighborhood regulars.
This halal food shop exclusively sells raw meat; they don't serve cooked dishes.

A friend recommended it to me. Located on Zhixing Road in Guangzhou's old town, it's been open for over 30 years. They mainly sell beef, all pre-seasoned and sold by weight.
I don't eat beef myself, but my family does. I bought it once, and now there have been many times since—the flavor is amazing, and you don't need to wash it, cut it, or season it yourself. It's just so convenient~~

Sliced Beef
Cut thinly against the grain and fully marinated, you can just toss it straight into the wok at home, and it won't get tough even if you overcook it. You can also lay it on top of nearly-cooked rice to make beef claypot rice (baozi), or steam it with a little cordyceps flower (chongcao hua).

Minced Beef Paste (Niurou Hua)
What locals in Guangzhou call 'rou hua' is essentially minced meat. It's also pre-seasoned, and my mom said you can taste bits of dried tangerine peel (chenpi) in it. You can steam it directly into beef patties, drop it into broth for a meatball soup, or use it to make mincemeat dishes.

Preserved Mustard Green Beef Paste (Chongcai Niurou Hua)
Minced beef blended with finely chopped preserved mustard greens (chongcai). Chongcai here in Guangzhou refers to large-headed pickled mustard greens (the root is huge, which is why it's called 'datoucai'). Chongcai paired with beef is a classic Cantonese home-style dish. This chongcai beef paste can be steamed directly over boiling water.
Black Pepper Steak
These are pre-cut steaks marinated in black pepper, ready to throw straight into the pan. If your teeth aren't great or you find cutting steak a hassle, you can just snip the steak into beef strips with kitchen shears and stir-fry them.
If you aren't into pre-cut and pre-marinated meats, the shop also sells whole cuts of fresh beef. Just ask the clerk whatever cut or texture you're craving.
As a lazy cook like me, I just have the staff weigh out a pound, portion it into three bags, and toss them in the freezer. I grab a few bags for my mom—one bag is the exact portion for a single meal, covering the day's protein needs easily and simply.
