The Tongxin Great Mosque is the oldest and largest mosque in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. It holds profound influence among Muslims in southern Ningxia's mountainous areas. Historically, its Quranic education (madrasa) was exceptionally advanced, serving as the region's hub for religious and academic activities where numerous renowned Muslim scholars studied and taught.

Legend has it that Tongxin Great Mosque was first built in the early Ming Dynasty, boasting a history of about 600 years. It underwent three major renovations during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1936, during the Red Army's Long March (Western Expedition), the Shaan-Gan-Ning Yuhai County Hui Autonomous Government was established right here.

The mosque's standout feature is its blend of traditional Chinese and Islamic architectural styles, dominated by timber framing, brick carvings, and hip-and-gable roofs (xieshan), with decorations incorporating Arabic geometric patterns and Quranic verses. The 'Pine and Moon' brick carving on the spirit wall out front holds immense artistic value. Grand and impeccably decorated, it was designated as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level in 1988. Following multiple restorations, it still preserves its historic appearance to this day and stands as an important witness to the cultural fusion of the Hui and Han peoples.
