Speaking from a 17 yr old who did buy a BMW for their first car ,it's expensive. I bought  the M sport package. 140K mileage paid less than 6K and the car so far had been really unreliable. Had a bad DTML pump and a charcoal canister go bad in the first week spent $1000 on repairs and spent $110 on a breakfluid change now at the Indy shop I took it too discover I was leaking Power steering fluid, valve cover gasket leaking and oil pan gasket. I'm looking at about $1500 to fix it fully. So keep in mind they are expensive. My family has helped me so far cover the repairs since I'm still in school. I wish now I would have just bought a dealer BMW with low mileage

Buy a car used not from a dealer! By the way my 330i e90 has 165,000 miles I bought it 140,00 only issue I've gotten was the Window door regulator don't let miles fool you as long as you can work on your own car it's not a big of a deal for maintenance

Wish my first car could've been a BMW but I was 40 years old before I could afford one (used, paying cash for it). Funny how Millenials and the younger generation think they deserve the best of everything when they're just starting out in life. Justin is right, look at depreciation. Go ahead and buy an expensive car to impress your friends, but just remember how much you'll be losing over time! Lol!

Go for an E30 or E28. Cheap insurance and cheap to maintain. Plus super reliable. It's a mechanical and not electrical car

I bought a 2008 5 series as my first car at 17. 75k miles, no accidents or big issues at all. Right now I'm at 80k, I've had the car for about 4 months with no issues. My advice if anyone is trying to buy a used BMW- be sure the previous owner(s) have detailed record of scheduled services, oil change etc. it's not worth the risk to buy one and realize there are issues later down the road. That being said, I would absolutely recommend a bmw as a first car if you can afford it.
