I'm going to leave it here after fighting for almost an hour with some company asking for help with their slow website. They have WooCommerce and "only 400 products". How bad can it be! So I checked standard elements and even WP backend is slow and I can't figure out why would it be, I took it locally, I can see huge wp_postmeta table, first hint, then 7000 queries on WP products backend page, second hint... Took me an hour to do an obvious - open one product... So yeah, they have only 400 products but....

Variations are a killer. WooCommerce's achilles heal.

What a nightmare.  What did you end up doing? I spent 6 months trying to get a guitar parts website running nicely that had 60k+ products. I ended up giving the client a refund and passing them onto someone else because I couldn't get all the variations and pricing to import well enough - even using All Import Pro and CPTs. It broke me.

Elasticsearch should be the champion here. 9k variations ‘should’ be easier to retrieve from ES store than DB - at least we rely quite heavily on ES at scale, largely for this very reason. I think you did well with the split of services here
