Xi'an Great Mosque Guide: Historic Huajue Lane Islamic Architecture and Tang Dynasty Gardens in China
Explore the Great Mosque of Xi'an nestled deep in Huajue Lane within the Muslim Quarter, a nationally protected cultural heritage site. Discover this ancient Chinese-style garden mosque founded in the first year of Tianbao during the Tang Dynasty, and experience total peace right in the middle of a bustling city surrounded by feiyan dougong (traditional flying eaves and brackets), towering ancient trees, and centuries-old stone steles.

I'd been dying to visit the Xi'an Great Mosque and the Muslim Quarter, and this past April, I finally made it happen. Tucked away deep down the lively Huajue Lane in the Muslim Quarter, it's also known as the Huajue Lane Mosque and ranks as one of the top four major mosques in the country. The mosque was originally built during the first year of Tianbao in the Tang Dynasty, and after going through continuous renovations and expansions across the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, it boasts a history of over a thousand years and is recognized as a key national cultural relic protection unit.

Unlike the typical mosques you might picture, the main prayer hall and pavilions are all built in traditional Chinese architectural styles, complete with feiyan dougong (traditional flying eaves and brackets), grey bricks, and ancient trees. The entire temple is split into multiple courtyards that unfold step by step along a central axis, blending deep Islamic heritage with the elegant vibes of traditional Chinese gardens in a super rare and seamless cultural mashup.

Outside, the Muslim Quarter is super loud and packed with the amazing smells of local street food, but the moment you step foot inside the mosque, everything goes totally quiet. Towering ancient trees and peaceful courtyards frame quiet stone steles that silently stand to tell the story of a thousand years. Separated by just a single wall, you get this wild contrast between buzzing city life and total, calming serenity that immediately clears your mind.

When visiting Xi'an, most people only know about the Muslim Quarter food scene and totally miss this thousand-year-old ancient temple hidden right in the middle of everyday neighborhood life. Taking some time to slow down, wander around, soak in the vibe of the ancient architecture, and appreciate the story of cultural blending is the ultimate, one-of-a-kind romantic experience in the ancient capital of Xi'an.
