Exploring Nagu Town by Qilu Lake in Tonghai, Yuxi: The Majestic Najiaying Mosque and Authentic Halal Yellow Beef

Summary:

Explore Nagu Town, a centuries-old, purely Hui Muslim historic town nestled by Qilu Lake in Yuxi, Yunnan. Marvel at the grand and historic Najiaying Mosque (Najiaying Mosque), take in the winter views of seagulls fluttering gracefully by the lakeside, and savor the town's renowned, authentic fresh halal beef alongside traditional local crafts.

Built right along the shores of Qilu Lake, the predominantly Hui Muslim town of Nagu sits about 25 kilometers from my resort near Fuxian Lake. After accidentally stumbling across some insanely fragrant beef there on a past trip, I've made it a rule: whenever the beef craving hits, I’m heading straight to Nagu.

The vendors in Nagu always leave a super warm impression—they're genuinely honest and keep their word. Aside from the beef, the town boasts some seriously delicious halal eateries, top-quality steel knives, and the most chill walking paths along the lake. Every winter, massive flocks of seagulls gather to winter by Qilu Lake, making it an absolute hotspot for hanging out with and feeding the gulls.

The absolute standout of Nagu Town is the Najiaying Mosque (Najiaying Mosque). Majestic and steeped in history, it's a classic Chinese Islamic masjid. Legend has it that its construction was commissioned in the late 13th century by Nasr al-Din, who served as the governor of the Yunnan Branch Secretariat, with further expansions taking place during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty.

Walking up the steps lined with various potted plants, you'll see gorgeous marble tiles gleaming brilliantly under the blue sky. Inside, the spacious hall laid with pink carpets is spotless and bright—definitely worth checking out.
